The Offaly man, who opened with a 69 on Thursday at TPC River Highlands, had four birdies to his name by the turn.

His birdie at the 11th was his third on the spin, and things got even better at the par 5-13th. Lowry's 264-yard drive was followed by a controlled approach shot before rolling in a putt from 25 feet.

It was pars all the way home for the 2019 Open champion who didn’t drop a shot all afternoon to move to nine-under par, four shots adrift of halfway leader Joo-Hyung Kim.

A second-round 70 sees Seamus Power sit on three-under par.

On his 22nd birthday, Kim added a 65 to his opening 62 to reach 13-under-par to remain at the top of the standings.

Kim, who had a faultless round with five birdies, said the work he has been doing over the past few months has made him feel confident among the strong competition.

"I think this stretch is making me more sharper and more ready and I think it’s kind of time to show," he said.

World number one Scottie Scheffler marked his 28th birthday with a 64 to sit two strokes back, alongside Collin Morikawa and Akshay Bhatia after a three-hour delay due to lightning in the area.

Xander Schauffele is a shot further back.
