Shane Ryan falls short in men's 50m freestyle European final

Shane Ryan finished a disapointing eighth in the final of the men's 50m freestyle at the European Swimming Championships in Belgrade on Sunday.

His time of 22.17 seconds was slower than the Irish record time he set in the heats the day before.

Kristian Gkolomeev of Greece won the gold medal.

Nathan Wiffen, led at the 800 mark in the final of the men's 1500m, which was held over from Saturday due to thunderstorms over the outside pool, but had to be content with a fourth placed finish in a time of 15:10.64. That was around ten seconds slower than his personal best time.

The gold went to 16-year-old Kuzey Tuncelli of Turkey.
