Sophie Becker and Jodie McCann have secured their places at the Paris Olympics after reaching the final athlete qualification quota for the 400m and 5000m respectively.

Becker has been ranked 46th in the 48-athlete list issued by World Athletics and will compete in the 400m in Paris alongside Rhasidat Adeleke and Sharlene Mawdsley, with whom she won a 4x400m relay silver medal at the recent European Championships in Rome.

In the 5000m, McCann is ranked 39 out of 42 athletes and she will join her brother Luke, who is set to compete in the men's 1500m.

Thomas Barr, a veteran of two previous Olympics, has missed out on the 40-athlete quota in the 400m hurdles but he will still be competing in Paris as part of the 4x400m mixed relay team, as he looks to repeat the gold medal achieved at the European Championships in June.

Becker and McCann join a host of Irish athletes who have already qualified for the Olympics, with Cathal Doyle and Andrew Coscoran set to join Luke McCann in the 1500m.

Ciara Mageean, Sarah Healy and Sophie O’Sullivan will compete in the women's 1500m, with Sarah Lavin preparing for the 100m hurdles and Fionnuala McCormack lined up for the marathon and Kate O'Connor set to compete in the heptathlon.

Mark English will race in the men's 800m while Brian Fay will compete in the 5,000m.

In the field events, Eric Favors will represent Ireland in the shot put, with Nicola Tuthill preparing for the hammer.

Meanwhile, at the Diamond League event in Paris Sarah Healy ran a blistering 3:57.46 to take seventh in a rapid 1500m as Faith Kipyegon broke her own world record, with a time of 3:49.04.

The time was good enough to move Healy ahead of Sonia O'Sullivan on the Irish all-time list, only behind Ciara Mageena, who ran 3:58.69 for 10th place in Paris.
