Championship wrap: Will Keane hits winner for Preston

Republic of Ireland striker Will Keane scored the only goal as Preston made a winning start to life under new manager Paul Heckingbottom at home to Luton Town.

Keane bagged his first goal of the season in the 39th minute to secure three points against one of the Championship's favourites for promotion in Heckingbottom’s first game since being named as Ryan Lowe’s replacement.

His international teammate Cheidozie Ogbene should have given the visitors the lead a few minutes earlier, doing brilliantly to jink his way into the box but failed to hit the target with a poorly-placed finish.

Kaine Kesler-Hayden found the overlapping Emil Riis with a delightfully timed back-heel and he knocked the ball inside for Keane, who drilled low across James Shea with his second touch.

Sunderland stopped free-scoring Burnley in their tracks at the Stadium of Light by making it three wins from three in the Sky Bet Championship.

Despite agreeing to sell winger Jack Clarke to Ipswich, the Black Cats secured maximum points through a goal from his replacement on the wing, Romaine Mundle.

The 21-year-old has been waiting for his big chance since arriving from Standard Liege in February, and he impressed a crowd of more than 40,000 with a display that included a wonderful 26th minute finish.

That proved the difference as Sunderland, who have won all three league games with clean sheets under new head coach Regis Le Bris, frustrated Burnley.

West Brom continued their unbeaten start to the season as they claimed their second successive away victory in a 2-1 triumph at Stoke.

A frantic first half saw the Baggies take the lead through Karlan Grant before the hosts levelled the game after on-loan Liverpool man Lewis Koumas netted on his home debut.

Less than two minutes later, West Brom were back in front as Josh Maja's sweetly struck effort whistled past Viktor Johansson just after the half-hour mark.

Ireland midfielder Jayson Molumby picked up a yellow card in first half injury-time but played 86 minutes in the West Brom engine room as they dug out a vital win.

Summer signing Tommy Conway came off the bench to score a last-gasp penalty and earn Middlesbrough a 2-2 draw with Portsmouth at the Riverside.

Championship newcomers Pompey looked set for their first win of the season after first-half goals from Christian Saydee either side of Matt Clarke's header for Boro.

But Conway struck in the 90th minute to earn a deserved point for Boro, who had 29 shots on Portsmouth’s goal.

Arnor Sigurdsson scored his first goal of the season as Blackburn came from behind to beat Oxford 2-1 in Ewood Park.

John Eustace's men showed their character and quality to recover from a goal of the season contender from Mark Harris who volleyed the U’s into a 44th-minute lead.

The hosts still went in level after Joe Rankin-Costello’s smart turn and shot in stoppage time before Iceland international Sigurdsson curled in a classy 83rd-minute winner, just seven minutes after his introduction off the bench.

Moussa Sissoko scored for the first time on his return to Watford as Derby were beaten 2-1 at Vicarage Road.

Ebou Adams fired the Rams ahead early on but that was cancelled out by a spectacular Vakoun Bayo effort in a first half that also saw Derby assistant manager Richie Barker sent to the stands.

Ex-France star Sissoko, in his second spell as a Hornet, struck in the 76th minute to complete a comeback that saw Watford maintain their 100 per cent start to the season. They have won all three Championship games plus an EFL Cup tie.

Norwich are still looking for their first Championship win of the season and Sheffield United remained undefeated after a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Carrow Road.

The Canaries took a 22nd-minute lead through Josh Sargent against the run of play, but the visitors were level just after the half-hour mark following an assured finish from young skipper Ollie Arblaster.

Plymouth earned a point in a 1-1 draw at QPR despite playing most of the match with 10 men – and ending it with nine.

After Michael Frey gave Rangers an early lead, Morgan Whittaker equalised just before the half-hour mark for the Devon side.

Kasey Palmer came off the bench to score against his former club and earn Coventry a 1-1 draw with Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

The hosts took the lead in first half stoppage-time when a left-wing corner was headed into the path of George Tanner, who found the roof of the net with a sweetly-struck right-footed volley from just inside the box.

Hull and Millwall remain winless this season following a low-quality goalless draw at the MKM Stadium.
