Sharlene Mawdsley signed off her season in winning fashion as she won the women's 400m event at the Galà dei Castelli meeting in Switzerland.

The Newport AC athlete posted a time of 51.35 to finish ahead of Austria’s Susanne Gogl-Walli and Lieke Klaver of the Netherlands.

It was Mawdsley’s first out since the Paris Olympics where she was just edged out of a medal in the women’s 4x400m relay as Ireland came fourth while she failed to make the final of the individual event.

There was an Irish two-three in the men’s 800m as Luke McCann set a new PB of 1:45.33 to finish second behind France’s Gabriel Tual.

With Tual looking the likely winner from well out, there was a competitive sprint for second with McCann having enough to come through on the right as the line came into view with English - 1:45.56 - just behind him.
