Something For The Weekend: Sexy Tadhg's cultural picks

admin admin | 10-17 00:15

IMRAM returns to Dublin from 7th – 16th November 2024, showcasing the rich diversity of modern Irish-language literature through a mix of live performances, author interviews, readings, and multimedia shows.

One of the featured artists is singer, songwriter and electrifying live performer Sexy Tadhg, who will join a quartet of the most dynamic voices in modern Irish poetry - poets Julie Goo, Marcus MacConghail, Laoighseach Ní Choistealbha and Dubhán Ó Longáin – for Ceolta, an evening of live music and poetry presented in association with Poetry Ireland),

We asked Tadhg for their choice cultural picks...

FILM

The original Alien movie is always on my mind. From the simplistic title, the disgusting grotesque aesthetic of Giger's alien, Ridley Scott’s filming style and lighting choices. It’s one of the greatest triumphs of the horror genre. And it’s in space, always a plus.

MUSIC

I’m currently neck deep in anything hyperpop and high energy. Especially when I’m in the gym, I love pumping feminine girly energy into my veins when surrounded by masculinity. It’s like my own dirty little secret, like wearing panties to church.

BOOK

I recently remembered I can read books, who knew! Screens have dominated my vision so much the paper feels like a welcome rest. Although my current read, George Orwell’s 1984, is far from a comfortable read, it does give one great insight into a world dominated by fascism and misinformation. Oh wait, that’s just the internet.

THEATRE

I’ve just completed the debut run of my musical Television. Flicking through the channels of our personality, we discover the impact media has had on the foundational relationships of human life. Religion, sex, political opinion, love, and much more, it’s all on the television. And what an immense joy and honour to be a part of Dublin Fringe!

Sexy Tadhg in Television

TV

After writing a musical entitled Television you’d think I was a TV fanatic. But in all honesty, I haven’t watched telly in years. I’m a YouTube girly through and through. So, I’ll use this moment to guide your fingertips toward my current YouTubical obsession, Mark Felton. A middle-aged, monotoned English man with a sarcastic wit that is often a welcome and brief uplift from the dark topic of his channel, which is all things World War II. I know girls, it’s intense. But it’s fascinating to see how this war has shaped our current world’s politics, borders, cultures, divisions, conflicts and lives. Highly recommend.

GIG

On the 14th of November, I’ll be joined by my brass band, and multiple fabulously talented poets in the Grand Social, to celebrate this year’s IMRAM festival. A great night will be had as we celebrate and connect with that art that is so deeply ingrained in our culture: literature!

ART

I have great admiration for painters who master light. The Deposition is an example of this that always sticks out in my mind. Christ lies at the foot of the Cross between Nicodemus, Joseph of Arimathea (who is wrapping Christ's body in the shroud), Mary Magdalene, the Virgin Mary, a Holy Woman and Saint John. Jacopo opted for a night scene in which the illuminated figures heighten the sense of sadness.

PODCAST

Trixie and Katya. The world-renowned drag queen duo and their ridiculously named podcast The Bald and the Beautiful - I’ve inadvertently based much of my personality/humour on due to them being my only source of joy during Covid captivity. Although Trixie is on maternity leave, sunbathing and writhing on some ice sheet in Alaska, seven edibles deep, Katya soldiers on and brings us edifying, emotional, camp, and hilarious conversations with a selection of gAy-Listers (A-list celebrities in gay world). Not the boreworms!!!

TECH

I recently purchased wireless earphones, and my quality of life has increased dramatically as a result. It makes mundane tasks like hanging up wet clothes somewhat manageable, taking public transport almost achievable, walking places somewhat thrilling, watching porn highly intimate, and my ear canals a little worn out.

THE NEXT BIG THING...

Who cares! Live in the now babe, what’s my current big thing? Not cooking - I absolutely love eating takeaways, precooked meals, and processed foods. Pleaseee stop giving your body nutrients. You don’t deserve them!

Ceolta (in association with Poetry Ireland), an evening of live music and poetry featuring Sexy Tadhg and poets Julie Goo, Marcus MacConghail, Laoighseach Ní Choistealbha and Dubhán Ó Longáin is at The Grand Social, Dublin on Thursday, 14th November 2024 - find out more here.
