Whole Wild World: The bus tour powered by books heads out West!

admin admin | 04-23 00:15

We are now into the second week of the Whole Wild World tour with Laureate na nÓg, Patricia Forde and Children's Books Ireland.

This is the best (and definitely most colourful) bus on the road, and we want to let you know where they are stopping next and how you can join in on the fun!

The Whole Wild World bus started its journey from Ireland’s most northerly point, Malin Head in Co Donegal on 15 April on a two-week adventure along the Wild Atlantic Way.

The wheels on this bus are certainly going round and round - roughly 1,400km in total. Children's Books Ireland will gift 1,400 books during this cultural roadshow – one book for every kilometre travelled!

At the weekend there was a full day of fun in the Laurate na nÓg's hometown of Galway, before the Whole Wild World bus set off for another great week. So where are they off to next? Is it coming to a stop near you? Check out the stops below before the tour comes to an end at Kinsale Library, Co Cork this Sunday, 28 April.

Week One

Of course, the month of April often brings showers, especially on the west coast but hail and rain did not dampen the spirits of the many authors and illustrators aboard the bus.

In Donegal, there were six lucky school visits across Malin, Creeslough, the Glenties and Killybegs, as well as Leabharlann Phobail Ghaoth Dobhair where artists Sadhbh Devlin, Paul Howard, Isla McGuckin, Malachy Doyle and Kim Sharkey held workshops with children in English and as Gaeilge.

Travelling down the coast and through the counties, Patricia picked up more artists and illustrators along the way including Alan Nolan, Serena Molloy and Karen Harte who took part in Sligo’s Hawks Well Theatre event to 340 cheering students.

From Sligo to Leitrim and Mayo, with even MORE talented artists like Jennifer Farley, Chris Haughton, Pádraig Kenny, Jane Mitchell, Sarah Webb and Áine Ní Ghlinn dropping in along the way! Across the two weeks, over 35 authors and illustrators will be aboard.

At the weekend the bus pulled into County Galway, following visits to Leenane National School and Scoil na bhForbacha, it came to a halt on Middle Street in Galway city.

Decked with reams of multicoloured Whole Wild World bunting, the street was closed on Saturday 20th April to host a day of free public events including interactive storytelling and monster doodles with Niamh Sharkey, Dave Rudden, Ashwin Chacko and Paddy Donnelly to name a few! From 2pm – 5pm families also had the opportunity to visit the free Book Clinics where they could get a prescription for their next great read.
