Behind the music - Baba

Baba aka Siobhán Lynch has released her new single, Sad Party. We asked her the BIG questions . . .

Speaking about the song, Baba, who previously featured on the second edition of 100% Her, which showcases contemporary songs written exclusively by women, says, "I wrote the chorus of Sad Party during one of the first easings of the Covid restrictions, when you could have six people in your garden with a cheeseburger on their head or whatever those crazy rules were.

"My friends were never off social media during lockdown and looked like they were having a ball: baking, hosting virtual quizzes with cocktails, and so I imagined that this was going to be an incredibly fun reunion.

"But after a few drinks, everyone was literally crying, they were all so miserable and a little crazy. Being cooped up, as we all were, was making them really have to confront their lives. Some of them were just really lonely and struggling. There wasn't a dry eye in the house."

Baba has performed at Electric Picnic, Castlepalooza and The Ruby Sessions.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I recently became a mama to a little girl called Minnie, or Minnie Moo as she prefers to be called. I have a 14-year-old Jack Russell pup called Maggie, who was my first baby but I am not sure naming the two so alike was my greatest idea. I have an obsession with house plants and have to keep adding shelves to my tiny house in order to facilitate said addiction.

How would you describe your music?

A little bit pop, a little bit soul and always honest.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I love vocalists, singers that can break your heart with a few notes. Some of my favourites are Nina Simone, Minnie Riperton, Jeff Buckley, Freddie Mercury and Lianne La Havas.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Oasis in what is now the 3Arena. I was very young and tiny and the security allowed me into an area where I could see the stage clearly. Liam didn't show because he was 'sick’ so Noel took over as lead singer, I think it turns out he and Noel had a bust up!

What was the first record you ever bought?

The Spice Girls - Spice. Still one of my favs!

What’s your favourite song right now?

Billie Eilish - Birds Of A Feather.

Favourite lyric of all time?

Whoa, so many to choose from but I am going to choose lyrics from my own song, Apollo. Apollo was my little boy who I lost in the second trimester of pregnancy in 2023. It was a hard process to write his song but something I am very proud of. "Apollo watches the skies, Shelters me so I survive, Shines a light for me to find, He softly guides, Relieves my mind."

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Lover, You Should've Come Over - Jeff Buckley.
