Funk rock Belfast band Mr Pink have released their new single, Love Hate Heartbreak. We asked the band's guitarist Mark Russell the BIG questions . . .
Having played in various outfits together over the years and taking their name from Steve Buscemi's character in Reservoir Dogs, Mr Pink formed around Mark, Michael Smith (drums), Ciaran Buchanan (bass) and Adam Mullan (vocals).
The song’s eye-catching stop-motion animation video was created by artist Ciara Dunne (@cardboard_ciara) and was influenced by Peter Gabriel’s landmark promo for Sledgehammer.
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
We are from Belfast. My favourite colour is actually blue. I have irrational fear of tea and coffee.
How would you describe your music?
So far it has largely been based in funk rock, but we have branched out into pop, heavy rock, metal and slight use of Ska! We set out to not restrict ourselves to any particular genre. We approach music from the point of view, if it feels good, do it!
Who are your musical inspirations?
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queen, Peter Gabriel, Faith No More, Pearl Jam, Muse, Janes Addiction, Nightwish, Gary Moore, Frankie Goes To Hollywood.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Travis - 2002, Belfast, Odyssey Arena, supported by Doves!
What was the first record you ever bought?
Foo Fighters - Nothing Left To Lose.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Jane Wiedlin - Rush Hour (memorably covered by Portadown band Joyrider - Ed).
Favourite lyric of all time?
This because it always makes me cry: "No, I would not give you false hope, On this strange and mournful day, But the mother and child reunion, Is only a motion away" - Mother and Child Reunion by Paul Simon.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Paul Simon - You Can Call Me Al. To me it's the perfect song. Sad lyrics, happy music, tin whistle solo, percussion solo and a bass solo! Not to mention Chevy Chase in the video...what more could you want!
