If you're one of the lucky ones who managed to bag a ticket for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour gigs at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, congratulations!
It's fair to say this is no ordinary tour for many reasons. It’s the first tour in history to surpass $1 billion in revenue, making it the highest grossing tour of all time with untold cultural impact.
But one of the most interesting facets of the Eras Tour has to be the ever-evolving fan chants and rituals. A host of singalongs, refrains and coordinated handclaps have become beloved traditions and take audience participation to the next level.
As over 150,000 Swifties are set to descend on Ireland’s capital to witness the pop megastar journey through her almost two-decade career - here are sixteen traditions to get you concert ready.
Friendship bracelets
Fans have been making and trading friendship bracelets on the Eras tour sparked by a lyric from her track You’re On Your Own, Kid, where she sings: "So make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it, you’ve got no reason to be afraid". So if you want to be part of the tradition, get your craft kits out!
Blank Space
In the 1989 world tour when Taylor was performing Blank Space she would sing the name of whatever city she was in, so after you hear "But I’ve got a blank space, baby, And I’ll write your name", scream DUBLIN!
Marjorie
Marjorie is one of the most emotional songs during the Eras tour as it’s about Taylor’s grandmother who died when she was 13. Marjorie herself was an opera singer, and her vocals feature in the outro of the song when Swift sings: "And if I didn’t know better / I’d think you were singing to me now". When Marjorie comes on, turn the torch on your phone and hold it up in the air, creating a sea of lights for Swift to see.
We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together
Swifties get a treat when backing dancer Kam changes the way he says "like ever" in We are Never Ever Getting Back Together, so listen out for that.
Anti-Hero
This chant originated from the remixed version of Anti-Hero. In the Bleachers remix of the song, Jack Antonoff responds to a line in the second pre-chorus by singing "Taylor you’ll be fine". So after Swift sings "Did you hear my covert narcissism I disguise as altruism / Like some kind of congressman?", the audience shouts "Taylor, you’ll be fine!"
Number 13
Taylor says 13 is her lucky number, so fans have been turning up to the Eras tour with a 13 drawn on their hand, which should be easy enough to recreate at home.
All Too Well (10 minute version)
Fans have embraced the new lyrics of All Too Well (10 minute version), particularly one line from the third verse following "You taught me ’bout your past, thinkin’ your future was me / And you were tossing me the car keys". Get ready to scream with zeal: "F*** the patriarchy!"
Also during All Too Well, when she mentions snow it will rain white confetti. There’s also multi-coloured confetti at the end of the show if you want to nab some.
You Need To Calm Down
During Swift’s anthem You Need to Calm Down, which details her support and love for the LGBTQ+ community, fans have taken to singing the final line of the second verse along with the singer extra loud: "Cause shade never made anybody less gay!"
Fearless
In her Fearless era in the late 2000s, Swift made a habit of putting her hands in the shape of a heart at the end of the bridge. Almost two decades later, Swifties honour this tradition by joining in with the singer and raising their hands ahead of the final chorus.
You Belong With Me
Another beloved tradition that has evolved among Swifties is the clap during the You Belong With Me bridge. After the lyrics "I’m the one who makes you laugh / When you know you’re ’bout to cry," the crowd does a quick double clap on the beat.
Delicate
This chant originated in 2018 during the Reputation tour and is still going strong. After Swift sings "We can’t make / Any promises now, can we, babe? / But you can make me a drink" the crowd responds "One, two, three, let’s go b***h!"
Don’t Blame Me
Following the bridge and just before the breakdown of Don’t Blame Me, one fan recorded themselves shouting "Take me to church, Taylor" and since then fans have adopted the chant around the world. After Swift sings "Every time you're, every time you're lovin' me" respond: "Take us to church, Taylor!"
Shake It Off
More clapping, this time a triple clap following the pre-chorus during Shake It Off. After Swift sings "But I keep cruisin’ / Can’t stop, won’t stop movin’ / It’s like I got this music in my mind / Sayin’, 'It’s gonna be alright'" clap three times on the beat.
Karma
During Karma, fans have taken to imitating Ice Spice who appears on the deluxe edition of Midnights. So after Taylor sings "Sweet like justice, karma is a queen / Karma takes all my friends to the summit" the crowd responds: "Facts!"
Bad Blood
Taken from Kendrick Lamar’s lyrics in the Bad Blood remix, when Swift sings the line, "If you live like that, you live with ghosts," the crowd replies "You forgive, you forget, but you never let it go".
Bejeweled
During Bejeweled, Swift sings the line, "By the way" and pauses, the audience takes their opportunity to ask: "Where are you going Taylor?", to which she replies: "I'm going out tonight".
Taylor Swift is playing a trio of sold-out gigs on Friday 28 June, Saturday 29 June and Sunday 30 June at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.
