8 of the best foodie events taking place this Culture Night

Culture Night kicks off this Friday 20 September, with a host of dazzling, inspiring, moving and completely free events taking place across the country.

Now in its 19th edition, the annual extravaganza celebrates culture, creativity and the arts and will see thousands of people hit the streets to drink in what's on offer.

With all that hopping from art shows to music performances to workshops, you'll need plenty of fuel. Thankfully, Culture Night has a range of foodie events on the bill.

So whether you're looking for a nibble on the go, or want to learn about different cuisines, here's our pick of the best food events across the country this Culture Night.

Bagel deep dives and tastings at Dublin's The Bretzel Bakery

Bring an empty belly to this talk and tasting at Dublin's iconic Bretzel Bakery. Attendees will indulge in an array of freshly baked artisanal breads and pastries, while enjoying engaging conversations about the bakery's storied heritage and its pivotal role in Dublin's culinary landscape. This unique event runs from 4pm-5pm and offers a sensory journey through flavour's and histories, connecting the community through the shared joy of exceptional baked goods.

Celebrating the humble spud at Cork's Potato Festival

Both Ireland and Poland are connected by a love for the simple spud, and with September traditionally being a time for Polish digging, there's no better reason to delve into Polish cuisine. Come along to learn about the history and traditions associated with potatoes, and sample Polish cuisine - including a demonstration of how to make Polish potato pancakes. Event runs from 4pm-8pm.

Tastings and music at Cork's English Market

The historic English Market, the renowned Cork city centre cultural landmark, opens its doors for one night of the year only to celebrate Culture Night from 6pm-9pm. A selection of English Market traders will be open exclusively, serving traditional tastes and local treats, ranging from handmade sushi rolls to local cheese and charcuterie, wine tasting and samples of traditional Cork favourites, with local musicians adding to the atmosphere.

Stillgarden Distillery tour in Dublin

Come and visit Stillgarden Distillery to learn about the (g)inspiration behind their range of beautifully crafted modern Irish gins*. The tour will bring you around the small but perfectly formed distillery, followed by a Q&A with one of Stillgarden's liquid experts. All tour guides are super knowledgeable about Stillgardens' Modern Irish Spirits. Each fully guided class is 20 minutes in duration. Booking required.

Pasta workshop at Sligo's Pasta Fresca

Stella, pastaia (Italian for 'pasta maker') and co-owner of Pasta Fresca, will be showcasing how to make different types of fresh pasta from scratch. She will talk attendees through the process and show them how a few simple ingredients - flour, eggs and water - can be transformed into a number of delicious pasta shapes. Runs from 6:30pm-7:30pm.

Coxinha and samba with Wexford's Brazilian community

In partnership with Creative Places Enniscorthy, come celebrate with the Brazilian Community through music and dance with Brazilian Samba artists and plenty of Brazilian finger food such as coxinha, Pastel and more. While here, check out a stunning exhibition of Brazilian produced Irish lace. Event runs from 5pm-8pm.

A dazzling street party on Dublin's Moore Street

This vibrant street party on Moore Street runs from 6pm-11pm and will feature Afro-Irish music and dance plus a late-night food and craft market. Sample Nigerian street food, Brazilian churros, Romanian BBQ, Asian dumplings, Polish honey and flatbread, as well as Indian leather goods, Turkish perfumes, Ecuadorian jewellery, Peruvian trinkets, Nigerian clothing and much more. Pick up the newly commissioned zine that gives the history of Moore St and introduces its traders.

Whiskey tasting in Dublin's 37 Dawson Street

Running from 5pm-7pm, this glamorous whiskey tasting will immerse you in the rich culture of whiskey as you sample a variety of premium blends. Whether you're a whiskey connoisseur or just looking to try something new, this event is perfect for everyone. Learn about the history and production process behind each unique blend from our knowledgeable experts. Booking required.
