4.9 magnitude quake strikes Whanganui Basin

Nearly 13,000 people — including as far away as Auckland — have reported feeling a 4.9 magnitude quake which struck the Whanganui Basin this evening.

The quake, centred 70km southwest of Waverley, caused light shaking when it hit the area at 7.23pm, according to GeoNet.

It came in at a depth of 83km.

Approximately 12,964 reported feeling shaking as of 8pm.
