A Woolworths spokesperson confirmed to 1News the incident took place within its Bayfair store.
"Our team are all safe."
One witness posted on social media that she had been locked down in a nearby salon due to a stabbing.
She said she could see police with "big guns" as well as ambulance staff.
"Omg locked in the salon due to big stabbing incident in Countdown next door in Bayfair Mall."
In her post, she added it was hard to believe an incident like this was happening in Mount Maunganui.
