Police have released the name of the man who died after running into the sea at Mount Maunganui on April 15.
He was John Rawiri Piripi Pitihira, aged 37, from Mount Maunganui.
Yesterday, it was reported a 37-year-old man ran into the surf to "avoid arrest" after a burglary.
Two other men at the scene, aged 32 and 53, were arrested.
Police confirmed the body was found a short distance up Omanu Beach at about 5am.
"Despite efforts from police, FENZ and ambulance crews, the man was unable to be revived," said Inspector Clifford Paxton at the time.
Police were continuing to provide support to Pitihira’s whānau.
"A post mortem has been completed and the results have been referred to the Coroner," said a police spokesperson.
"Police have also notified the incident to the Independent Police Conduct Authority."
