New Zealand Music Month kicks off on May 1st with the theme of this year’s celebration, Amplifying Aotearoa.

It’s a creative slogan open to many forms of interpretation and one Kiwi musician revealed her take on it today while 15 metres underground in Auckland.

Singer and beatmaker Geneva AM was invited to try out the acoustics in the midst of Auckland's underground rail link.

The huge rail project is still under construction, but presents what some music enthusiasts thought would be ideal conditions to amplify Geneva AM’s voice.

The construction site offers high concrete walls set more than 15 metres underground and long tunnels.

To mark the start of upcoming NZ Music Month, Geneva AM performed an eight song set on an underground platform today, clad in a hard hat, high viz vest, protective eye googles and gloves.

Songs included Whakataka To Hau, Pokarekare Ana and Tipuna Takau.

The artist, who has already filmed a music video in the sea, said she felt a sense of spirituality singing underground.

“Being nestled here within Papatūānuku (Mother Earth) is pretty important,” Geneva AM said after her performance. “It’s very significant for me today and I’d like to dedicate the set to her.”

The City Rail Link is now 80% complete and trains are expected to be trialled on the underground lines by the end of the year.

The Chief Executive of City Rail Link felt the performance signified ongoing progress.

"It was absolutely fabulous and I think quite beautiful,” Sean Sweeney said.

“Having Geneva breathe life into this facility that will be used by the people of New Zealand.”

1News received an exclusive invite to cover today’s event.

It will be showcased on NZ Music Month’s online and social media sites from May 1 as an example of Amplifying Aotearoa.

It is unlikely there will ever be another performance on the underground site given the ongoing schedule for completion.
