Police are looking into a report of assault at Ashburton College in Canterbury, after one of the school’s students was admitted to hospital late last week.

Principal Simon Coleman has confirmed, in an email to parents, that a "completely unacceptable" incident took place between two Year 9 students on Friday August 9.

The email has been leaked to 1News and shows one of the students had to be taken to hospital.

"Our thoughts are with the student and we are supporting them and their family," it read.

Coleman told parents the behaviour went "against everything Ashburton College stands for".

“We are following our school discipline process in responding to this incident,” his email said.

1News has approached the school this morning asking for more information, and requesting an interview.

Meanwhile, police have confirmed they are making inquiries "following a report of an assault at a local Ashburton school on Friday".

Past problems at Ashburton

Ashburton College has faced several allegations of violent assaults and bullying in the past.

Just last year, footage emerged of a girl’s head being smashed onto a concrete floor.

In 2022, a 1News investigation uncovered 16 allegations at the school stretching back over eight years, with several parents claiming their children had become suicidal after being targeted.

The reviewer made 19 recommendations for improvement which the school promised to implement.
