Caoimhin Kelleher is in line for his first game of the season with Liverpool on Saturday as first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker is a doubt for the visit of Bournemouth in the Premier League.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot revealed that Alisson is likely to miss the game due to a hamstring problem he has been carrying for some time.
The Brazil international, who in Milan in midweek spoke about the increased workload players are facing with the expansion of major competitions like the Champions League, has played every match for club and country this season.
"He has a slight issue with one of his muscles," said Liverpool boss Arne Slot.
"We wonder if this game is coming too early or not. It happened before the Milan game but after he felt it more."
Kelleher has served as back-up to Alisson in the Liverpool goal for a number of seasons and has generally impressed with his performances when called upon, winning two League Cups in the process.
However, any hopes that he is seen as a long-term successor to the Brazilian appear to have been dashed after it was confirmed that Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili will be moving to Anfield from Valencia at the beginning of next season.
The Ireland goalkeeper recently spoke of his desire for regular first-team football, whether that is at Anfield or elsewhere, and he was open to a move away from the club during the summer.
"I've made it clear in the last few years that I want to go and be a number one and play week in, week out," Kelleher said earlier in the month.
"The club made that decision to get another goalkeeper and from the outside looking in, it looks like they've made a decision to go in a different direction.
"Sometimes from the outside looking in, it looks like that's 100% my decision but at times it's not always in my hands.
"It's been reported that Liverpool have rejected a few bids as well. My ambition is clear that I think I'm good enough and I want to go out and prove it."
