Kyren Wilson was dumped out of the Wuhan Open after the world champion lost a final-frame decider to China's Xiao Guodong in the second round.
Wilson peeled off breaks of 63 to take the first two frames but he surrendered the third, with Xiao coming back from requiring snookers to halve the deficit by holding his nerve on the final black.
That was just the kick-start Xiao needed as he clinched the next three frames to leave Wilson on the brink of elimination although the world number two rallied with back-to-back century breaks.
Momentum was with Wilson in a winner-takes-all final frame but it was world no 28 Xiao who took it after potting a long-range pink to seal a 5-4 win. Xiao next plays Barry Hawkins, who beat 18-year-old Stan Moody 5-3.
"Kyren is ranked number two in the world and became world champion this year so I kept a clear head and reminded myself to be patient for my chances," Xiao told World Snooker’s official website.
"Whether I was leading or trailing, I couldn’t let my guard down.
"When I compete in China, I really want to win. Having fans and my family in the audience makes me want to show my best. Thankfully I managed to get the result."
It was also a day to forget for World Championship runner-up Jak Jones as the Welshman was thumped 5-1 by Jack Lisowski, who sealed victory with a fantastic 130 break, having earlier knocked in 136.
There were no such concerns for Judd Trump as the world number one reeled off four frames in a row to beat Scotland’s Anthony McGill 5-2.
Trump set up a blockbuster last-16 clash with another Scot in John Higgins, who edged Zak Surety 5-3.
Shaun Murphy defeated Noppon Saengkham 5-3 and will next face Ali Carter, who beat Marco Fu by the same scoreline.
Other winners on Tuesday include Ben Woollaston, Si Jiahui, Chris Wakelin, Ding Junhui and Mark Joyce.
