England's Matt Wallace shot an opening round 63 to lead The CJ Cup Byron Nelson by one stroke in Texas.

The 34-year-old opened with three straight birdies and carried his momentum throughout the day to head into the clubhouse on eight under.

He leads by one stroke from Canada's Taylor Pendrith, Sweden's Alex Noren, Taiga Semikawa of Japan, and the US quartet of Chesson Hadley, Jake Knapp, Davis Riley and Kelly Kraft.

Brad Hopfinger, who is making his PGA Tour debut at the age of 35, Ben Kohles, Alex Smalley and Hayden Buckley are a further shot back.

Defending champion Jason Day trails by three after dropping shots on two of his final five holes.

Jordan Spieth was unable to maintain a strong start as he split a birdie and bogey down the stretch to finish on three under.

He said following his round: "It's a very gettable golf course.

"I just played the easy holes poorly. That was kind of the story of the day."

Seamus Power is 10 shots off the lead after carding an opening 73. The 37-year-old from Waterford registered three birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey in an underwhelming round.

The first round will resume early on Friday after wet weather delayed the start of Thursday’s play.
