Atalanta threw away a two-goal lead days before their second leg with Liverpool as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Serie A strugglers Verona in Bergamo.
The home side, and Gianluca Scamacca in particular, initially continued from where they left off at Anfield on Thursday, when they beat Jurgen Klopp's side 3-0 in their Europa League quarter-final first leg.
Scamacca, who scored twice on Merseyside, put Atalanta ahead before Ederson doubled the advantage after just 18 minutes.
But hopes of a comfortable victory to prepare for this Thursday’s home leg against the Premier League side were ended when Darko Lazovic and Tijjani Noslin struck early in the second half.
And Verona held on for a valuable draw that moved them a point clear of the relegation zone.
Elsewhere in Italy, Fiorentina’s winless league run reached five matches as they drew 1-1 at home to Genoa.
In Spain, the night’s solitary LaLiga fixture saw Valencia post a 1-0 away win against Osasuna, with Andre Almeida’s first-half strike deciding the contest.
