Simon Carr has called time on his professional tennis career at the age of 24.
The Mullingar native first represented Ireland at Davis Cup level in 2018 and was part of captain Conor Niland's team that faced Austria on home soil at Limerick's UL Arena this February.
Four years ago Carr reached a career high ATP singles ranking of 512, a year after he had picked up an ITF title in Tabarka, Tunisia.
Announcing his decision to retire from the professional game, Carr thanked those who had helped him throughout his career, including his family with his mother having introduced him to the sport at the of nine and his father, former Dublin All-Ireland winner Tommy Carr playing a pivotal role with strength and conditioning.
"Many mixed emotions today as I announce my retirement from professional tennis. I would like to sincerely thank anyone and everyone who has helped me on this incredible journey that I've been so fortunate to live for the past 10+ years," he wrote on Instagram.
"None of which would have been possible without my family’s unwavering support throughout the countless highs and lows we experienced together.
"I will always be grateful for the amazing people, experiences and life lessons this sport has given and continues to give me. One door closes and another opens. Let’s see what’s next."
