Shelbourne secure 250-year Tolka Park lease

Dublin City Council has granted Shelbourne a 250-year lease for Tolka Park.

The League of Ireland club has faced an anxious future over their permanent home venue as they do not own the Tolka Park site.

Dublin City Council took control of the stadium in 2016 as part of a planned deal that would see Shelbourne move into a redeveloped Dalymount Park and share the venue with Bohemians, bringing an end to their residency in Tolka Park which began in 1989 when they acquired the ground's lease from Home Farm.

However the 'Save Tolka Park’ movement from a section of supporters objecting to the Dalymount move has gathered significant support, with the decision of Dublin City Council a major step to securing their future at the Drumcondra venue.

"We extend our heartfelt thanks to the executive and the councillors of Dublin City Council for their support and recognition of the importance of Tolka Park to Shelbourne FC, the local community and Irish football as a whole," a Shelbourne statement read.

"Tolka Park holds a special place in the hearts of our supporters, players, and staff, and we are excited about the opportunities this long term agreement brings for further investment and enhancement of the facilities, details of which will be communicated in due course.

"Tolka Park is one of Dublin’s most storied sporting venues, all at Shelbourne FC are proud to be entrusted as custodians and to build upon the rich history and heritage of the ground, which this year celebrates its centenary, as we strive for success both on and off the pitch."

Moving to Drumcondra sparked a resurgence for the Reds, who went on to dominant Irish football in the 1990s and early 2000s. In a 14-year spell, Shelbourne lifted six Premier Division titles, four FAI Cups, four LFA President’s Cups, and one League of Ireland Cup.
