Shane Lowry ready to 'fight for every shot' at Valhalla

Shane Lowry insists he's going to 'fight for every shot' as he goes into the final round of the PGA Championship just two shots off the lead.

Lowry, who held a share of 29th after the second round, made a blistering start to Saturday's third round and covered the front nine in six-under-par 29 to storm into contention and then rolled in a massive 37-foot birdie at the par-four 13th.

The Offaly man followed that with a 32-foot birdie putt at the par-three 14th and eventually signed for a round of 62, putting him right into contention for second major win.

"I'm going to go home tonight and obviously rest up and go out tomorrow and prepare as best I can and give it my all.

"I've been here before, late on Sundays at majors, and I know what to expect, but you can't have expectations. I'll just go out and I'll fight for every shot.

"If I'm successful tomorrow, it'll be great. But if I'm not, it's not going to be the end of the world either.

"I'm looking forward to it, this is what I came here to do. To play well in these tournaments is what it's all about.

"That's the reason I get up in the morning. It's the reason I go to practice, and it's the reason why I sacrifice so much is to try and win these tournaments. I've got a good chance tomorrow."

Lowry was on track to shoot a record-breaking round of 61, but instead left a putt for birdie just short on the final hole.

Despite that, his round of 62 was enough to equal the record initially set by Branden Grace in the 2017 Open, which was equalled by Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele in the opening round of last year's US Open and achieved again by Schauffele on Thursday.

"I just didn't hit it hard enough," Lowry said of the putt on the 18th. "I mean, I felt like it was going to be quicker.

"I obviously wanted to shoot 62 or 61, but I know there's a job to do as well, so I wasn't going to rush it five feet past. You know, it was just one of those. I tried to just drop it in and yeah, it just broke away from the hole.

"But it was good fun, It was enjoyable and standing there with a chance of history, it was pretty cool."
