'I want to be No 1' - Kelleher opens the door to Liverpool exit

Republic of Ireland international Caoimhin Kelleher has admitted that he may have to leave Liverpool to pursue his ambition of being a No 1 goalkeeper.

The 25-year-old enjoyed his most prominent season in the Reds' first-team last term after a hamstring injury to Alisson Becker opened the door for the Cork native.

Kelleher made 26 appearances in all competitions for the Merseysiders, more than his previous four seasons combined. With Southampton shotstopper Gavin Bazunu out with a long-term injury, he also looks set for an extended run between the sticks for his country.

With Arne Slot replacing Jurgen Klopp in the Liverpool hotseat the position may be up for grabs, but Alisson's superb form since joining the club means he is likely the man in possession of the jersey for the immediate future.

The highly-rated Brazilian has three years left on his contract, so Kelleher has admitted that first-team opportunities may again become limited.

Kelleher has been linked with a move to Glasgow Celtic, with former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers lining up a replacement for Joe Hart, and speaking to the Athletic, Kelleher has opened the door to a move away from Anfield.

"It would be great if that happened at Liverpool, but I’m not silly," he said when asked if he sees himself becoming number one at Anfield.

"I know that Ali has been the best goalkeeper in the world for years.

"I’ve had such an amazing time at Liverpool. It’s been a crazy journey for me and one that I’ve absolutely loved. I love the club, I love the fans and I have a great relationship with the players and the staff.

"Whether it’s here at Liverpool or somewhere else, I do feel the next step for me is to be a No 1."

Kelleher has 12 international caps and is set to add to that tally next month with the friendly double-header against Hungary and Portugal.
