Athlone Town lead tributes to Eugene Davis

Former Athlone Town, St Patrick's Athletic, Bray Wanderers and Shamrock Rovers player Eugene Davis has died.

Davis had a long and illustrious League of Ireland career throughout the 1970s and '80s.

A product of famous Dublin schoolboy outfit St Joseph's Boys, he cut his teeth at Shamrock Rovers in the early '70s, before a move to Athlone in '74 led to a highly successful period.

He was a key figure for the Midlanders, hitting his peak in 1980/81 when he notched 23 league goals as Athlone lifted their first title under Turlough O'Connor.

He also played in the famed 1975 UEFA Cup second round clash when Athlone held AC Milan to a 0-0 draw at at St Mel's Park.

He moved to St Pat's in 1982 and enjoyed a couple of fruitful campaigns in Inchicore before spells at UCD, Bohemians and Bray. He retired in 1989.

Athlone led the tributes to Davis, posting on social media platform X: "We are all extremely saddened this morning to hear of the passing of Eugene 'Pooch' Davis.

"Eugene's name will forever live in the the annals of our Club and his exploits on the pitch are remembered by many supporters whenever the history of the club is spoken about."
