"I was right on the edge, one point inside the top-10. I was about 20 points outside the top five. I wanted two races but unfortunately, there was no wind on the bay in Marseille today.

"The best I can do is eighth unfortunately. A medal is off the table. I'm sailing for pride, I just want to put in a good performance, to give the people who supported me something to celebrate."

Eve McMahon finished 13th overall

Meanwhile, Eve McMahon did get on the sea on Monday, putting in a hugely creditable display in Race 9 to finish in seventh spot overall.

This saw the 19-year old climb to 13th in the overall standings, with an outside chance of sneaking into the medal race.

However, with the boats lining up for the 10th and final race, the uncongenial weather forced its abandonment and though another time was initially scheduled, the organisers ultimately had to admit defeat.
