The 2028 Solheim Cup will be played at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, the LPGA said on Tuesday.

The dates for the international tournament, where top players from the United States face those from Europe, have not been finalised.

The Solheim Cup will be the first major women's competition held at Valhalla, which opened in 1986 with an 18-hole course designed by golfing great Jack Nicklaus.

Valhalla has hosted numerous marquee men's individual and team events, including the 2008 Ryder Cup and four PGA Championships, most recently in May when Xander Schauffele won his first major.

The Solheim Cup is a biennial competition between teams of 12 players and follows the same format as the men's Ryder Cup.

The 2024 Solheim Cup will be held from 13-15 September at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia while the 2026 edition will be at Bernardus Golf in Cromvoirt, Netherlands.

Cavan golfer Leona Maguire has represented Europe in the last two Solheim Cups, making a remarkable debut on American soil in 2021 when she won four-and-a-half out of a possible five points on her debut as Team Europe won 15-13.

Maguire won three points out of five last year in Spain as Europe retained the Cup when the sides finished 14 points apiece.

The United States lead Europe 10-7-1 all-time in Solheim Cup competition.
