There was disappointment for both Irish boxers in action at the European Championships in Belgrade today, with Paris-qualified Dean Clancy and Adam Hession both tasting defeat in their respective bronze medal fights.

Clancy was ousted in his quarter-final bout with Azerbaijan's Malik Hasanov. After a cagey opening round, Hasanov upped the gears to run out a 5-0 winner.

Featherweight Hession also bowed out at the quarter-final medal stage, outclassed 5-0 by his Russian opponent Eduard Savvin.

The Galway native was unable to add senior silverware to his underage European collection, struggling to match the brain and brawn of Savvin.

Shannon Sweeney, Niamh Fay, Kellie Harrington and Lisa O’Rourke will all fight for silver over the coming days.
