Walsh and Mehaffey toil on day one of South Africa Open

Lauren Walsh and Olivia Mehaffey have serious work to do to make the cut at the Investec South African Women's Open after the Irish pair laboured on the opening round in Cape Town.

England’s Rosie Davies and Switzerland’s Elena Moosmann share the lead after rounds of 66 to sit on six-under at the €320, 000 event.

Walsh is a dozen shots adrift after a round of 78, one ahead of Mehaffey who is on seven-over.

Three successive bogeys on the front nine made it a tricky start for Walsh, before double bogeys at 15 and 16 saw her slip further down the standings, before finishing on a positive note with a birdie at the last.

Mehaffey too had a couple of double bogeys in her round, hers coming on the front nine, and she failed to turn things around on the back nine, closing with three bogeys in her final four holes.

Davies and Moosmann are the players to catch, with Norway’s Julie Boysen Hillestad third on five-under par.

It comes just days after the 24-year-old said she would stop playing at the end of the season.

South Africa’s golfing icon Ashleigh Buhai, winner of the 2023 trophy, is not in the field to defend her title.
