Alex Garland's new film Civil War depicts an all-too recognisable America, ruled over by a three-term President, and torn apart by a vicious conflict. The causes of the war remain obscure - all that matters here is the danger of the present moment, and the destruction of civilisation.
In this world, we follow a ramshackle group of journalists, following the story on a road trip from New York to Washington DC and what they instinctively feel must be the conflict’s bitter end.
The film stars Kirsten Dunst as Lee, a world-renowned war photographer, grappling with the fact that her years of unflinching work from in far flung conflict zones has done nothing to prevent the bloodshed on her doorstep. She is accompanied by rookie photographer Jessie, whose ruthless drive has echoes of Lee’s younger years. Narcos star Wagner Moura, along with veteran actor Steven McKinley Henderson as reporters complete this trio of hacks on the road.
