Pick of the Day

Kurt Cobain: Moments That Shook Music, 9.25pm, BBC Two

A bit of a Kurt Cobain/Nirvana night opens with this documentary about the events surrounding the tragic death of the Nirvana frontman in 1994. He was 27.

It combines footage captured by fans in Seattle and raw material from news crews reporting at the time.

There is the poignant reaction from the electrician who discovered Kurt's body when installing a security system at his Seattle home, as well as statements from police at the scene.

There's the chaos, confusion and devastation caught on video by his fans - including the moment a tape recording of an emotional Courtney Love reading her husband's final letter at a vigil in Seattle.

Plus, there’s a revealing interview with Cobain himself, conducted just months before he died.

Followed at 10.10pm by When Nirvana Came to Britain, a documentary examining the band's visits to the UK, with contributions by former members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic.

It charts Nirvan's rise from performing in tiny venues through to their legendary and infamous TV appearances on shows such as The Word and Top of the Pops - moments that helped to cement their status as one of the biggest rock bands on the planet and brought grunge culture to the mainstream.

Then there’s Foo Fighters at Reading 2019 (11.10pm), where Huw Stephens introduces highlights from the headline set, as the band led by Dave Grohl ran through classic hits from their back catalogue.

Tommy Cooper at the BBC, 10.30pm, BBC Four

Marking the centenary of his birth, Lenny Henry presents a selection of performances by the comedy genius that was Tommy Cooper.

This collection features some of Cooper's most famous routines and reveals that his reputation for terrible tricks that inevitably went wrong was all based on an act, as his on-stage bumbling persona hid a real talent as a magician.

Followed at 11pm by The Art of Tommy Cooper, a documentary looking at the life and work of the larger-than-life comedian from Caerphilly, whose image as a lovable clown concealed an often-complicated private life.

Contributors include fellow comics Tom O'Connor and Barry Cryer.

Saturday Cinema

Lawrence of Arabia, 3.00pm, TG4

You can watch this classic any time on Netflix, but if you haven’t access to the streamer, here’s an opportunity to catch this marvelous marathon of a movie.

The Oscar-winning epic drama was directed by David Lean, and stars Peter O'Toole, Omar Sharif, Anthony Quinn, Alec Guinness and Jack Hawkins.

An enigmatic British Army officer (O’Toole as TE Lawrence) tries to unite the Arab nations against the Turks during the First World War.

This brings him into conflict with the military authorities when he engages the enemy with guerrilla tactics instead of more conventional methods.

But his increasingly torn loyalties leave him close to madness.

Enough Said, 9.45pm, TG4

In contrast to the multi-award-winning marathon that is Lawrence of Arabia, here’s a more muted gem of a movie, a comedy-drama starring James Gandolfini, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Catherine Keener and Toni Collette.

Louis-Dreyfus plays a masseuse anxious about her daughter leaving home who finds romance with a man (Gandolfini) also coming to terms with an empty nest.

She also befriends a bitter divorced client (Keener), who turns out to be her new partner's ex-wife.

Here’s something for anyone seeking a late-night scare or two.

It’s a horror anthology, starring Andy Nyman, Martin Freeman and Paul Whitehouse.
