Paddy McGuinness told Patrick Kielty on Friday's Late Late Show that he was looking in the wrong place for his Irish roots.
The Lancashire-born presenter and comedian was asked by the host about a recent "sneaky little tour of Ireland".
"Yeah, I was out doing something in Ireland that I can't really talk about," he replied coyly. "It's all very hush-hush!"
"I was looking into sort of where my family are from and different things..." McGuinness continued.
"That doesn't give it away at all!" smiled Kielty.
"No, no, no, no!" McGuinness laughed. "The reason I was doing it, my dad, right? God rest his soul, told me his side of the family are from Tipperary."

As members of the audience cheered, McGuinness said: "Sorry to let you down - they weren't! I feel bad now! I wish they were!
"They were from Ballina! So, I was out there and I just had an absolutely blinding time. Everyone in Ballina looked after me. I can't tell you how many different pubs I went in!
"I loved it and it was just nice... because on my mum's side, my grandparents on my mum's side, their records from Ireland were totally lost. We couldn't find a thing about them, so it was great to discover my dad's side - especially after he said Tipperary!"
McGuinness will be back in Ireland next year as part of his Nearly There standup tour.
