It has been announced that the controversial Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice will be released in Irish cinemas on Friday 18 October.
Directed by Ali Abbasi (Holy Spider) and written by journalist Gabriel Sherman, The Apprentice stars Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) as Donald Trump, Jeremy Strong (Succession) as his mentor and attorney Roy Cohn, Martin Donovan (Tenet) as Fred Trump Sr, and Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm) as Ivana Trump.
The Apprentice, which includes the Dublin-based Tailored Films among its producers, traces Trump's origin story as an ambitious young property developer in 1970s and 1980s New York.
The film, which was backed by Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
The Apprentice begins with a disclaimer that many of its events are fictionalised.
In a statement issued to AFP ahead of the film's Cannes premiere, Trump's campaign communications director Steven Cheung said a lawsuit would be filed "to address the blatantly false assertions from these pretend filmmakers".
"This garbage is pure fiction which [sic] sensationalises lies that have been long debunked," added Cheung.
At a Cannes press conference, director Abbasi was asked about the reaction by Trump's representatives to his film.
He replied: "I don't necessarily think that this is a movie that he would dislike. I don't necessarily think he would like it.
"I think he would be surprised, and I would be happy - I would offer him to go and meet him wherever he wants and talk about the context of the movie, have a screening, and have a chat afterwards."
