MG has begun adding to the competitive pressure being piled on to mainstream cars sold in Europe, with the planned arrival in July of its new fully-charging hybrid.

Direct competitors for MG will be companies such as Toyota - a leader in the hybrid field. Its entry level Yaris is priced at €28,260, while the new Chinese car will go on sale at just over €5,000 less. Nearer competitors would be cars such as the Suzuki Swift hybrid, which starts at €22,695.

The 3 is due on sale in Ireland in time for 242 registrations in July and the emphasis, again, is on price and standard equipment. The 3 will have 1.5 litre petrol engine and a 1.8 kw battery, which MG says will allow for more driving in purely electric mode.

The entry-level Essence model is priced at €22,995 and equipment includes a 10.25" infotainment screen and a 7" driver display, active cruise control, other safety features now standard in the industry and Apple and Android connectivity.

The next model up is the Excite, priced at €24,475 and it has extras such as alloy wheels. An Exclusive version has a 360 degree camera, LED headlights, heated front seats and imitation leather.

MG is claiming consumption of 4.1 litres of fuel per 100 km's but, as usual, we’ll wait to see what the real world figures are.
