Singapore Airlines apologises for 'trauma' caused during turbulence

Singapore Airlines has issued an apology after a passenger died of a suspected heart attack and dozens more were injured during severe turbulence on a flight this morning.

The Boeing 777-300ER plane diverted to Bangkok with 211 passengers and 18 crew on board after the flight experienced "sudden extreme turbulence" over Myanmar.

In a statement, Singapore Airlines said 143 staff and passengers have now arrived at Singapore Changi Airport from Bangkok.

"A dedicated Singapore Airlines team from Singapore is in Bangkok to assist our colleagues and the local authorities. We are providing all possible support to the passengers and crew from SQ321 who remain in Bangkok," the statement said.

Singapore Airlines chief executive Goh Choon Phong expressed his "deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased passenger."

"We also deeply apologise for the trauma experienced by all passengers and crew members on this flight.

"We are providing all possible assistance and support to them, along with their families and loved ones, during this difficult time. The well-being of our passengers and staff is our utmost priority," said Phong.

A dedicated Singapore Airlines team from Singapore was in Bangkok to assist the local authorities and those passengers and crew who remain in Bangkok.

Singapore Airlines said it was "fully cooperating" with the relevant authorities.

The company said another 79 passengers and six crew members were still in Bangkok, where some were receiving medical care.

Singapore's foreign affairs ministry issued a statement earlier, wishing those injured a quick and full recovery.

"The Singapore Embassy in Bangkok is onsite at Suvarnabhumi airport and the hospital to render the necessary consular assistance to affected Singaporeans and their next-of-kin."
