A Southland community hall has been left nearly destroyed after an unwelcome guest — a sliver ute — crashed inside last night.

In a post to Facebook, the Southland District Council shared images of the Orawia Hall – with a giant hole smashed through a wall and the ute covered in rubble. The vehicle also sustained some noticeable damage to its roof and rear window, at the least.

The post said the hall would be “out of action for quite some time” following the dramatic coming together of ute and community venue.

“Incredibly, it appears the driver suffered only minor injuries, but the hall did not fare so well,” the post read.

Police said they received a report of a single-vehicle crash — a vehicle versus a building on Ohai Clifden Highway in Eastern Bush — at around 11pm last night.

The driver received "moderate injuries".

"Police are making enquiries into the matter."
