The anticipation has reached fever pitch as Supercars make their debut at the Taupō Race Track — drawing thousands of motorsport enthusiasts eager for a thrilling weekend ahead.

For the first time, the roar of engines fills the Taupō air, signaling the start of what promises to be an unforgettable experience for fans who have been eagerly awaiting this moment.

Tony Quinn's vision — from concept to the track

Renowned motorsport figure Tony Quinn played a pivotal role in bringing this event to fruition, stepping in after the closure of Pukekohe Park.

Reflecting on the journey, Quinn remarked, "it hasn't been easy for anybody. A whole lot of people did a whole lot of work to get this race to start."

His efforts have culminated in a spectacle exceeding expectations.

"This is bigger than I expected and probably bigger than most people expected."

"I've been to races all over the world, been to many many races but this place has just created a brand new vibe of excitement and interest and people are all good and friendly," Quinn said.

The event has attracted a diverse array of enthusiasts, from mullets and seasoned petrolheads to families seeking a taste of high-speed excitement. 1News met one family who travelled from Townsville desperate to get selfies with drivers.

Local businesses in the updraft

The influx of visitors has injected new life into the local hospitality industry, with establishments such as Dixie Browns experiencing a surge in bookings.

Owner Grant Steel said the restaurant began getting reservation bookings as soon as the event was announced.

"The phone was ringing off the hook, We're really expecting in the next few days to be really, really busy, lots of crowds in here.

"we are only taking walk-ins to try help accommodate everyone."

Economic impacts will go more laps

Beyond the thrill of the races, there was a tangible economic boost for the region. Taupō Mayor David Travawas estimated a significant injection of revenue, citing the substantial spending habits of motorsport enthusiasts in New Zealand.

"We've conservatively budgeted for about $6 million over the course of the two to three days." He said Motorsport fans in New Zealand spend up on their favoured sport "so it's fantastic to have just a little chunk of that in the weekend".

With the overwhelming success of this inaugural event, discussions about future races at Taupō are already underway, hinting at a promising future for motorsport fans.

Police have also sent extra staff to the region reminding car enthusiasts to keep the drama and racing to the race track.

As the excitement continues to build, the track comes alive with the sights and sounds of Supercars tearing up the tarmac.

The chequered flag awaits, marking the beginning of a new era for motorsport in the Central North Island.
