A historic statue in Dunedin came within metres of being wiped out by a truck this morning, in a crash that left one person in hospital with moderate injuries.
Police said they were called to the Octagon, in Dunedin's city centre, at around 7.30am.
The truck, branded with the Pioneer Energy logo, allegedly came down Stuart St before crashing through "a historic wire fence narrowly missing the Robert Burns statue," according to a bystander.
"There is substantial damage to the covered walkway," the person said.
"If it had not stopped where it did it would have been a downhill run to the Dunedin train station."
The truck was carrying woodchips which are now scattered all over the path.
Hato Hone St John confirmed they was at the scene this morning, and one patient was taken to Dunedin Hospital in a moderate condition.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand said the driver of the truck was still in its cab when they arrived, and they helped remove the man from the vehicle.
FENZ said power and council authorities are "trying to determine the extent of damage to any powerlines and other property".
The Robert Burns statue is classed as a major landmark in the area, and has been in the Octagon since 1887.
Pioneer Energy have been approached for comment.
