An outdoor adventure park for Bluff is on target for completion in a matter of weeks.

On Tuesday, Invercargill City Council received a report detailing proposed updates to the name of Bluff Hill Motupōhue Active Recreation Precinct and its trails.

The precinct was on track to be known as Motupōhue Adventure Park once completed.

With plans to open in September, it will include more than 10km of tracks for mountain biking and walking. New tracks were being constructed as well as upgrades being made to existing ones, and updated names were on the cards for some.

Council strategic advisor open spaces and recreation Chris Bowen said there had been communication with Te Ao Mārama Incorporated — which represented Ngāi Tahu in Murihiku — and local rūnaka on a variety of names presented for the trails.

Councillor Darren Ludlow chaired the committee where the report was received and said all key partners were part of the process leading up to what was recommended by the Bluff Community Board.

“And I don’t want to dilute their voice at all because they know their town better than we do.”

Costs for designing and installing signage was covered by MBIE funding, while maintenance costs for signs would be covered by the council.

Mountain bike signage would be covered by the Southland Mountain Bike Club.

The report said the carpark and associated infrastructure was nearly completed with work still progressing on the network of tracks.

“Bluff Hill Motupōhue Active Recreation Precinct project is now reaching the sign development stage, where trail names and a park name are currently being considered,” it said.
