A Belgian man has been acquitted of drunk driving due to him having a rare condition where the body produces its own alcohol.
According to The Guardian, the man was acquitted in a Burges court today after it was found he has auto-brewery syndrome (ABS), a rare condition where the body produces its own alcohol.
The US National Library of Medicine defines ABS as "a very rare disorder" that "typically presents with the signs of alcohol intoxication, such as staggering gait, slurred speech, gastrointestinal distress, and state of confusion".
"It is characterised by the endogenous production of alcohol."
While people are not born with ABS, they can develop it after already having another intestine-related condition.
The man's lawyer Anse Ghesquiere said "another unfortunate coincidence" was that he also worked in a brewery.
While the man was before the court, three separate doctors were called in to determine if he indeed had ABS.
Following this, he was acquitted — with the judge emphasising that he did not experience any symptoms of intoxication.
