6 things to do in Dublin this weekend (Aug 16-18)

From sing-a-long screenings on the lawns of Malahide Castle, to the Dublin Horse Show's annual showcase at the RDS, there is be plenty to keep us entertained in Dublin this weekend.

India Day

Taking place at Farmleigh House and Estate in Dublin's Phoenix Park, India Day is one of the largest India-related events in Ireland. A confluence of Irish and Indian cultures, Sunday, 18 August, will be packed with music and dance programmes from both countries, cultural representations, fashion shows, food and a handicraft fair. With programmes ranging from Irish songs to classical music and Bollywood dance, India Day is an audio-visual treat for connoisseurs of all genres. Entry is free but register before attending.

Movies on the Lawn

Calling all musical fans, a double bill of sing-a-long movies is coming to Malahide Castle on Saturday, 17 August. Taking place on the West Lawn, The Greatest Showman will air from 2pm – 4pm, while 1978 classic Grease will show from 7pm – 8:45pm. Adult tickets cost €13 (+ 75c booking fee), children aged 3-16 cost €10 (+ 75c booking fee).

Dublin Youth Theatre's annual Big Show brings audiences on a weird and wonderful journey through Anthony Neilson's The Wonderful World of Dissocia. A darkly comic exploration of dissociation, mental illness, and the human psyche, this thought-provoking play will take place at Smock Alley Theatre from August 14-17 at 7:30pm. Standard tickets cost €21.

Aimed at families with young children (aged 5-9, ideally), Mimi's Space Adventure is a free exhibition that discovers how the science of space can help us here on Earth. The exhibition is accompanied by a free storybook for families to read at bedtimes and the back of the book features mini-interviews with real life space scientists and engineers in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Open on Saturday and Sunday from 10am - 4pm, the Institute of Physics can be accessed on Harcourt Row, next to the Ginger Man pub. Tickets are free but should be reserved - each individual ticket covers two adults and two children.

Dublin Horse Show

Since it was first held in 1864, the Dublin Horse Show has become an annual celebration of Ireland's affinity with the animal, from the best show horses to the best international show jumpers. The Show remains one of the best social occasions of the summer, with 168 national and international equestrian competitions set to take place as well as 'Best Dressed' competitions, pony rides for kids, great food, summer tunes and more. The National Botanic Gardens are embarking on an ambitious project for Heritage Week. With the help of visitors, they hope to produce an exhibition for this year's celebration entitled Stories from the Gardens.

The preview of the exhibition will take place in the Teak House from August 17 - 25 during usual opening hours, while the full exhibition will be on show from September onwards. The free exhibition explores the Gardens' rich social history and cultural heritage from the perspective of our visitors.
