admin admin | 08-02 16:15

As the sun begins to brightens our Emerald Isle, the allure of Connemara's rugged beauty calls out to adventurous spirits. And it's not just the mountains that are spellbinding. Connemara is famous for its food, and there's no better way to work up an appetite than going for a walk in the mountains.

Eoin Hamilton, Co-founder and CMO of HiiKER - a hiking app developed in Ireland - offers his top tips on the best hikes and a selection of the best cafes and restaurants to savor local delicacies after a fulfilling day's hike.

Búcán and Meall Cheo Loop

Distance: 7.3 km

Elevation: 522 m

Time to complete: Approx 3.5 hours

This loop walk takes you up to a jaw-dropping view of the Killary fjord below. The initial climb will get the heart pumping, but from there you can enjoy the 360 views as you complete the loop. Don't rush down, as the descent is steep back to a short road walk to the starting point.

Now it's time for the treat! The quality of food trucks in Ireland these days is exciting. And you won't be disappointed with The Misunderstood Herron. With a seasonal menu of coffees, pastries, sandwiches, and even some sweet treats, you will feed the hungry hiker you have created, all while soaking up the incredible views of the Killary Fjord.

Omey Island Loop Walk

Distance: 14.5 km

Elevation: 124 m

Time to complete: Approx 4 hours

This is one of the most unique walks in Ireland. There are no mountains, but to get to the island, you need to wait for low tide when an almost biblical pathway appears for you to walk across. Bonus points if you can find the hidden rock pool for a dip!

In order to get to the island safely, you need to understand the Omey Island tide times so be sure to do your research beforehand.

Just down the road lies Clifden, where you are spoiled for choice with a variety of pubs and restaurants. I'm a coffee fiend, and every time I visit, I have to go to 12 Pins Coffee.

Diamond Hill

Distance: 6.7 km

Elevation: 342 m

Time to complete: Approx 2 hours 45 minutes

This short mountain loop is a must-do if you are in the area. Starting from the Connemara visitor center in Letterfrack, follow the well-marked route. Reaching the summit and looking back over the Connemara mountains will stir up an adventurous appetite.

Back in Letterfrack, you'll find Kabo Cafe. Whether you're fueling up for your hike or filling up post-hike, you're in the right place. There are plenty of tasty treats and savory options to choose from. Not to mention good coffee!

Benlettery and Binn Gabhar loop

Distance: 7 km

Elevation: 701 m

Time to complete: Approx 3 hours 45 minutes

If you're looking for a bigger challenge, then this loop walk starting from Benlettery Youth Hostel will get your heart pumping. But having witnessed the jaw-dropping views from the top, I can tell you that it is 100% worth the panting! An extra hike like this requires an extra meal afterwards. The nearby Ballynahinch Castle offers some exquisite food options and if you can, take an outdoors seat. Feast as you look back over what you have achieved!

Seanadh Bheara hill loop

Distance: 7.6 km

Elevation: 338 m

Time to complete: 2 hours 45 mins

You'll be sure to beat the crowds on this one. This hike is not as popular as the previously mentioned routes, but you still get spectacular views over the southern coastline of Galway. And on a particularly clear day, you might catch a glimpse of the Aran Islands and the Cliffs of Moher.

Treat yourself to a well-earned meal in Screebe House. Soak up the surrounding vista as you tuck into some of the incredible lunch options available in this Luxurious Victorian country house.

This is just a small selection of of the amazing hikes and eateries available in Connemara National Park. You can find many more on the HiiKER app.
